GENERAL INFORMATION

The Faculty of Fisheries is one of the eleven Faculties at Ege University established in İzmir in 1955 offers both undergraduate and graduate educational programmes since 1982. Education in the Faculty is based on a semester system. In 2001-2002 academic year 564 undergraduate and 170 graduate students are enrolled in the Fisheries Faculty. The duration of study program is five years. The first year is a preparatory year for studying English. In the second, third and fourth years, the courses are generally on basic sciences and general fisheries. The programmes of the fifth years are directed towards acquiring practical skills and learning the use of technology through theoretical and applied courses given within the range of each department.

The undergraduate programme, spread to 4 years, awards a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree after its successful completion. Graduate programme administrated by the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences offers Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. Passing the foreign language exam is compulsory at graduate level. For those who are not able to pass this exam, one-year foreign language courses are offered in preparation classes.

The physical plant of the Faculty includes 3 main buildings, in Urla and Bornova, and a lagoon of 18000 da near the Bird Paradise. In Urla, the Faculty owns three research vessels: EGESUF, a 110 gross tons vessel, is utilized for fisheries research including fishing with trawl, gill and purse-seine nets and two smaller vessels, HIPPOCAMPUS (15 m in length) and SISBILDIR (10 m in length) for daily field trips in the near shore area. The EGESUF was designed as a fishing vessel and was launched in 1994. This vessel is 27 m in length, 6,5 m in width and it is operated by a 463 HP engine. The faculty also has two small fishing boats (6,5 m in length) and one zodiac boat. SUFA LAGOON is assigned to the Faculty in 1988 and is used as a research area. In this area there are fish traps and set nets. Mullets and sea bream are the most common species which are produced in the lagoon. In each department there are several laboratories equipped according to its needs and a library serving both the staff and the students. They have access to computer labs and Ege University Computer Center for analyses of data sets.

The Faculty of Fisheries carries out comprehensive scientific research activities with highly trained academic staff. At present, the Faculty comprises 130 academic staff including research assistants. The educational and research activities are supported by 53 non-academic staff. Many research projects are carried out at regional, national or international levels. Multi-departmental research projects were and are still being carried in collaboration with related foreign institutions. Each year the faculty hosts meetings, seminars, symposium or congress aiming to solve problems or exchange ideas and research findings on national or international basis.
